Data Privacy Day is observed every January 28th as a reminder to safeguard and protect private data. The day commemorates the signing of the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.
Although many take a reactive approach to data privacy, this day encourages both individuals and businesses to take a proactive approach to ensure your data remains safe. There are many things all of us can do to avoid being a cyber security victim, such as checking your privacy settings on your computer and changing your passwords. If you’re a business, it is important to ensure your privacy policies are up-to-date and that you have implemented appropriate online security measures.
For healthcare providers in particular, this day is a good reminder to ensure your employees receive regular HIPAA training as required under federal law and that your policies comply with the recent regulations under the HITECH Act.
